Understanding informal and De Facto adoption in Quebec before legalization in 1929 and the implications for
genealogical research.

Biography:
Holly, a Québec Genealogical eSociety member, is Vice-Chair, APGCAN (Association of Professional Genealogists Canada Chapter),
Charter Genealogist at AncestreeDetectives, genealogist at Sir Guy Carleton Branch (Ottawa) and Heritage Branch (Montreal) of
UELAC. Her genealogy website is https://familyfootprints.ca/ Holly’s goal is to be a Lifelong learner and use her skills to help others.
She successfully completed the Genealogical Research Certificate from Boston University in May 2020. She is a member of several
genealogy societies and organizations to keep up with advances in the genealogical field. Holly graduated from the Diploma program
in Public Relations Management at McGill University in 2013. Her B.A. Double Major, Journalism/Political Science, Concordia University
is from the Stone Age. Holly is retired from a 37yr+ career in Broadcast Media.

This is Part 1 in a 3 Part series.

Join Melanie McLennan, the daughter of a Land Surveyor and the wife of a cartographer, on how to identify the property
you are interested in as it would appear in the records.
This session will explain land settlement over time and how the maps and records changed as well as the different kinds of mapping.

Stay tuned for Parts 2 and 3 in early 2026.
Part 2: Build out the story of those who have lived there in the past and present, including how the property itself might change
over time (address, appearance, damage).
Part 3: Look for resources that would add information about the property.

Biography: Melanie is Canadian born, with Irish citizenship. Researching her own family’s heritage of Scots-Irish,
Scottish, Irish, English, French Canadian and northern European ancestry led her into pursuing formal education and a
career as a genealogist. To compliment her education with the National Institute of Genealogical Studies in Irish and
Canadian records, Melanie attended the Ulster History and Genealogical Summer School (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013,
and 2016) in Belfast (co-sponsored by the Ulster Historical Society and the University of Ulster, History Dept.).

She has devoted many additional hours of research practice at many archives and repositories in Dublin, Belfast, and
counties Fermanagh, Antrim and Armagh focusing on private research in national, civil and parish records, newspapers,
land and estate records to gain valuable knowledge through hands on experience. Melanie’s keen interest has expanded
into the study of Scottish and English records and the use of DNA analysis in researching family history.

Melanie has been working as a genealogical researcher and presenter for 13 years with her company Ancestral Tapestry.
Specializing in Irish, United Kingdom and Canadian records, she is available to work for her clients sharing with them her
knowledge, methodology and analysis skills, her research library and her enthusiasm for family history research.

recherche du registre foncier du Québec. Elle présente l’historique de cet outil de recherche, démontre comment utiliser l’index des
immeubles (informatisé ou numérisé) ainsi que l’index des noms du Registre foncier du Québec. Elle offre un aperçu des informations
qu’on peut y trouver et quelques méthodes de recherches particulières à la généalogie. En plus du Registre foncier, il y aura survol de
sites gratuits (ex : Villes, MRC, Infolot, Arpenteur général) pour vous aider dans vos recherches.
